Axie Infinity celebrates Philippine independence with Filipino Fiesta
The Philippines is inextricably linked to the Axie Infinity story.
To celebrate Philippine Independence Day on June 12, Axie Infinity developer Sky Mavis has announced the Filipino Fiesta Contest from June 9-13. This coincides with the unveiling of the first ever Lunacian Fortune Chests – artifacts that contain treasure such as Moonshards, crafting materials, and up to 100,000 SLP (Smooth Love Potion).
"The Philippines celebrates its Independence Day on June 12th, but the Filipino Fiesta runs nonstop from June 9th to June 13th. Compete in fierce Origins battles, earn Fortune Chests, and honor the incredible community — and country — that helped make Axie Infinity what it is today," the developer said in its blog post.
The Philippines and Axie Infinity
At last year's Philippine Web3 Festival, Sky Mavis Co-Founder and Growth Lead Jeffrey Zirlin, known to legions of Axie Infinity fans by his nickname Jiho, said salamat (thank you) to Filipinos in his keynote speech. He said that the Philippines and Filipinos are inextricably linked to the Axie Infinity story.
Axie Infinity, a Pokémon-like non-fungible token (NFT) game that enables players to collect, raise, and battle fantasy creatures, transformed the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Its meteoric rise in the Philippines brought global attention to play to earn – the term coined for blockchain games that allowed users to own the game characters as NFTs and earn from playing.
Axie Infinity brought financial inclusion to so many unbanked Filipinos and onboarded them to web3.
The Filipino Fiesta Contest is a testament to the importance of the Philippine community to Axie Infinity.
